Get to Know the ACT
The ACT is a college admissions exam used by nearly all colleges and universities to make admissions decisions with the goal of quantifying a high school student’s readiness for college. The exam provides colleges with one conventional data point that can be utilized to evaluate all applicants.
Get to Know the SAT
The SAT is a college admissions exam used by nearly all colleges and universities to make admissions decisions with the goal of quantifying a high school student’s readiness for college. The exam provides colleges with one conventional data point that can be utilized to evaluate all applicants.
Get to Know The PSAT
The PSAT/NMSQT is offered annually to a cohort of chosen 8th graders and high school students. Beyond serving as a practice assessment for the SAT, the PSAT/NMSQT holds a principal role in identifying a high school junior's qualification for the esteemed National Merit Scholarship Program.
Get to Know The ISEE
The Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE) is administered by ERB several times a year and accepted by thousands of schools across the globe. It is a flexible entrance exam that can be administered online, paper-based, or at home. The objective of the ISEE is to quantify 2-12 graders’ critical thinking and qualifications for admission into elite, private elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools.
Get to Know The CogAT
The CogAT assesses the reasoning and problem solving abilities of students. It is often used to identify gifted and talented students, to guide instructional decisions, and to help educators understand students' cognitive strenghts and weaknesses. The CogAT provides various levels of the exam depending on the student’s grade.
Get to Know The GRE
The GRE is a standardized test used by many graduate schools and business programs as part of their admissions process. It is designed to provide schools with a common measure for comparing the qualifications of applicants from diverse educational backgrounds while helping admissions committees gauge an applicant's prepardness for the rigors of graduate study.
How Important Are ACT/SAT Scores?
The ACT/SAT test may very well be one of the most significant tests your 11th or 12th grader will ever take and remains a significant factor in the college admissions process. Most universities place tremendous emphasis on the ACT/SAT and consider test scores an integral part of the admissions process, major selection, and merit-based scholarships.
There are nearly 34,000 high schools throughout the U.S., but approximately 2,800 colleges and universities in the U.S. College admissions have never been more competitive. The ACT and SAT are taken by nearly 3.7 million high school students annually throughout the United States, thousands of whom are right here in Dallas.
The average Core Edge Prep student who works diligently throughout the program generally increases his/her test score by a range of 3-12 points on the ACT and 200-600 points (1600) on the SAT. This type of score increase could make a world of difference in your child’s college choices and life goals.
* An ACT/SAT score is truly the only way for colleges to assess and compare each applicant on a
consistent foundation. A competitive ACT/SAT score will give your student an edge in the application process.
Diagnostic Assessments
At The Core Edge Prep, our test prep diagnostics and assessments play a crucial role in evaluating students' cognitive, academic, and sub-skills, preparing them for school entrance exams.
By pinpointing each student's specific areas for growth, we effectively reduce our students' stress and anxiety while optimizing valuable study time. These exam scores serve as a foundation for our staff to craft personalized tutoring curricula tailored to each student's needs. Once the diagnostic process is complete and thoroughly analyzed, parents receive a comprehensive score report, which is then thoroughly reviewed with a Core Edge Prep Director to develop an action plan.
Test-Optional Colleges DO Look At Your Scores
Opting for "test-optional" admissions doesn't prohibit the value of submitting ACT/SAT scores.
When admissions officers compare applicants with similar GPA's, a set of test scores can serve as a decisive factor. By including strong ACT or SAT scores that complement your GPA, you essentially bolster the credibility of your academic record, and enhance the overall strength of your application.
When Should We Start
Test Prep?
We advise our students to begin test prep during their freshman, sophomore, or junior year of high school. Factors that influence test prep commencement include a student's college choices, course schedules, planned extracurriculars, etc.
When Should I Take The ACT and/or The SAT?
Every student’s timetable is unique. Most high school students take the ACT, SAT, or both during the spring/summer of their junior year or in the fall of their senior year. Advanced students, who are academically and test-prep ready, should take the exams in the middle of their junior year as this will allow them more time to increase the rigor of their school classes with more AP’s and/or dual credit classes if needed. Regardless, it is essential that students leave adequate time to retake the exams if they want to improve their scores before applying to college.

We strongly recommend students refrain from sending scores on exam day. Our goal is to ensure that every student has the opportunity to receive and evaluate their scores before making informed decisions about which colleges they choose to share this information with.
Should I Take The
ACT or The SAT?
Our ACT/SAT Diagnostic Evaluation is a powerful tool that identifies a student's strengths and weaknesses on both exams. Most importantly, from a single diagnostic, we can determine the test that suits each student best.

It's important to note that all U.S. colleges and universities accept both ACT and SAT scores without preference for one over the other. For students opting to take both tests, we provide concurrent preparation for both ACT and SAT. Our holistic approach involves collaboration between instructors, directors, and the student to select the most suitable testing dates for their success.
Practice, Practice,
Practice
At The Core Edge Prep, we strongly encourage our students to take advantage of our bi-monthly authentic mock tests for ACT, SAT, PSAT, ISEE, GRE, and other standardized exams. In addition to customized homework and vocabulary in context exercises, we provide cognitive and processing developmental exercises to facilitate a comprehensive learning experience.

By incorporating these valuable resources, our students not only excel during each session but also solidify their understanding through practice, enhancing retention significantly. Our purposeful and rigorous curriculum, coupled with a student's determination to master concepts, plays a vital role in elevating our students' success and achieving exceptional outcomes.
Tailored Test Prep Plans
At The Core Edge Prep, our directors and instructors are highly knowledgeable in their respective fields, allowing them to tailor our ACT/SAT curriculum to each student's unique learning profile. We are committed to providing personalized attention by ensuring students work consistently with the same math and verbal tutor throughout their journey.

Our approach to ACT/SAT preparation sets us apart. While we do provide well-published strategies, tips, and tricks, we go beyond that. We encourage students to organically learn the subjects and topics essential for the test, leading to greater retention compared to mere cramming of strategies. This approach pays off on test day, ensuring our students perform at their best while maximizing results.
